The World of Warcraft: The War Within Pre-Patch event has unique Alliance and Horde-themed Shield, Off-Hand, and Back transmogs players can get – but only as random drops on characters below level 70. These items cannot be purchased from the vendor, and instead must be obtained by chance on low-level World of Warcraft characters participating in the Radiant Echoes event.
On July 30, World of Warcraft began the Radiant Echoes Pre-Patch event for The War Within, which has players battle memories of iconic monsters and bosses from WoW history in order to obtain exclusive mounts, pets, and transmogs. It got off to a rocky start, but World of Warcraft quickly buffed the event to make it much easier to participate in and collect all the exclusive cosmetics.

However, fans have now discovered a number of special transmogs available in the event that aren’t so easily obtained. When completing objectives or defeating the final boss at level 70, players have the chance to randomly obtain one of the Dalaran Defenders items that can be bought with Residual Memories, the currency from the Radiant Echoes event in World of Warcraft. That said, doing so below max level instead gives them the chance to obtain a Shield, Off-Hand, or one of four cloaks instead. These items feature unique, unobtainable, or rare appearances, as well as different visuals for Alliance and Horde characters.
Secret Drops in WoW Radiant Echoes Pre-Patch Event
Item | Type | Appearance Origin |
---|---|---|
Recruit's Sturdy Shield | Shield | Unique |
Recruit's Sturdy Tome | Off-Hand | Blackrock Spire questline removed in Cataclysm |
Recruit's Sturdy Cape | Back | Shadowlands Pre-Patch Event |
Recruit's Sturdy Cloak | Back | Shadowlands Pre-Patch Event |
Recruit's Sturdy Drape | Back | Dread Gladiator's Ensemble from Battle for Azeroth |
Recruit's Sturdy Wrap | Back | Combatant's Satin Cloak from Kul Tiran Tailoring and (Alliance) and Shadowlands Pre-Patch Event (Horde) |
The Horde version of the Recruit’s Sturdy Tome shares an appearance with the Tome of Divine Right, an off-hand from a boss in Lower Blackrock that could only be spawned as a part from a questline removed in Cataclysm. The Recruit’s Sturdy Cape, Recruit’s Sturdy Cloak, and the Horde's Recruit's Sturdy Wrap share models with back transmogs from the WoW: Shadowlands Pre-Patch event, Death Rising. The other back pieces share appearances with items in Battle for Azeroth content, but the Alliance and Horde versions of the Recruit’s Sturdy Shield are both completely new models.
The Radiant Echoes event gives a lot of experience, so players trying to get these items can easily reach the level cap in World of Warcraft before seeing them. Fans can visit Behsten in Stormwind Keep or Slahtz in Orgrimmar’s Valley of Honor to shut off experience gains, giving them more time to farm these items on a single character. Either way, fans should make sure their class can equip Shields and Off-Hands weapons, as they will only drop if so.
While fans are enamored by these simple transmog items, many are frustrated they are hidden away in this event – even the official announcement from WoW had no mention of them. Likewise, players are baffled as to why they cannot simply buy these transmogs like the Dalaran Defender items. Hopefully, World of Warcraft adds the items to the vendor before the event is over so fans don’t miss out on them.
